Where is God?

Before asking such a question, it is better to know the gender of God. Is God a He? Or is God a She? Or is God both? Many believe that God created all things. If God is the Creator, then God is definitely a woman, for every sensible person knows for certain that it is the woman who gives birth. But creation is impossible without the help of man. If that is a fact, then God is necessarily both... Half woman and half man... Ardhanari.

God is called by so many names - Almighty, Divine Being, Supreme Being, All Powerful, Omnipresent, Supreme Goodness, All Merciful, All Voice, All Knowing, Omniscient, Infinite, Eternal, Absolute, Author of All Things, First Cause, Prime Mover, Light of the World, Sovereign of the Universe, Most High and so on. You can add any number of adjectives, provided your adjectives suit both genders.

Once you agree with what is said above, the next question arises: Who is God? God is accommodating, collaborative, cooperative, Supportive, a Rescuer, Deliverer, Redeemer, Facilitator, Partner, Comrade, Mate, Wing Man, Man Friday, and so on. All else is left for your imagination. A positive thinker would strive to incorporate God existentially. Negative thinkers would like to do away with God.

Positive views of truth and duty impress the mind and lead to action. It is said that bhaktas are those who strive to see God, while Siddhas are those who have seen God. This may be the reason why Siddhas, the realised souls, always pooh-poohed idol worship and instructed their listeners to look within their minds to see God seated in their heart.

If God is love and if the heart is the seat of love, then logically speaking, the heart is the seat of God. But no sophisticated mirror would ever come forward to display the God seated in our heart. Perhaps the anaesthetists and surgeons in the operating theatre are blessed to see the hearts of others, but not their own. Even if they happen to see yours, they could only see the tick-toking historian and never your God. Your God is only yours to realise and not for others to see. So, God realisation comes only when you are a positive thinker and try to follow the multiple answers given to the question 'who is God' and put them all into action.

Now that you know what God is and who God is, the time is ripe to find out where God is. A certain king once asked a visitor to his court the very same question. The visitor who happened to be a Siddha answered in a jiffy, "Look into the mirror to know where God is." The king, without losing time, looked into the mirror. He saw his own image and foolishly searched for God in every nook and cranny of the mirror. The king did not understand the enigmatic language used by the realised being.

Since he could not make out anything from the words of the Siddha, he called a meeting of his ministerial team and compelled the team members to find the perfect answer to his doubt, "where is God?" The team members put their stupid heads together and ransacked them. Their attempt bore no fruit, and so they fell to their knees before the king and told him of their inability to find a valid answer to his question.

The king berated them and threw them in prison, commanding them to remain there until someone came up with a logical answer. He then threw the same question to his Chief Minister and threatened to cut off his head if he failed to find the answer to his poser within a week.

Time galloped faster than sound, and it was time for the chief minister to lose his head. He hugged his only little daughter and wept, before he told her to be brave and face the world in his absence. His clever daughter read his face and thereby his mind, and offered to go with her father to the king's court. Her father jumped to the conclusion that his little one wanted to be with him till his last minute on earth, and so agreed to take her with him to the court.

In the court, the king asked his Chief Minister, "Have you an answer to my question?" Before the Chief Minister could say "no," the little one smiled benignly at the anxious king and asked, "What is your question, Your Majesty?"

The entire court was surprised and shocked to hear the little one speak so boldly before the king. The king smiled back and gave voice to his doubt: "Where is God?" The little one heckled before she answered: "Where is not God?" There was laughter at this in the court like the lapping of waves. The king fell back as if he had been struck full in the chest.

It did not take much time for the king to see God in the mirror.
