The Dominion of Love

Pierre Teilhard Chardin (1881-1955), French-Jesuit priest, theologian, and philosopher has a great influence in modern thinking of the church-related study of humanity. According  to Chardin there are two ways of uniting mankind, one by external force  and the other by voluntary appeal. External force does not have anything beyond external unity and it cannot go beyond that. It is merely nominal or diplomatic. But internal power through close association, flexibility, sympathy, affection, can bring in unity. Chardin calls it “ love”. According to him love is the most universal, mysterious of cosmic energies. It is the mightiest power in the world which alone is irreplaceable in life-giving role.

The whole cosmic (world) process is the work of love. This alone can make mankind come together. Whatever is in the realm, in the milieu of love, is wonderful, lasting, peaceful, harmonious, and united. Love does not kill humanity, but creates and allow growing always, and gives opportunity of achieving full growth and maturity. It develops human personality to the full. Love is means and at the same time an end in itself. The whole cosmic process is born out of love, grows out of love and goes to fullness out of love.  There is nothing outside of love. It is love that guides humanity and assists to total fulfillment. The power of love is unique and fantastic. The human community is initiated, activated, sustained, and developed and directed to final fulfillment by and through love. Here all move forward in a continuous process. There is no question of any kind of annihilation. Here we are in the divine milieu, a word often used by Chardin in his reflections.

Man/woman occupies the most central or key position in the universe. It is a wonder to say that man/woman is the unique center of the entire creation, the whole universe. Human’s perfection is the sole role and purpose of the universe. Everything is made for him/her. He/she has to make use of and control everything as the supreme head of creation far beyond other living and non-living entities. Other beings find their fulfillment in attuning to the needs of the humans. He/she is the terminus of all beings. Everything in the universe is subject to him/her in total and amazing order.

Humans are the supreme commanders of the universe; together with the whole cosmos, they are moving to the final goal, the Christ being the total focal point. Chardin named it the Omega point. The whole created realities together with humans move to the ultimate end of all -- to the full growth and end in Christ. Christ is the center of the whole universe, and He controls everything in his wisdom, develops everything in his merciful and loving care. In this we contemplate that everything in the universe is related in perfect harmony and unity. We are all deeply challenged to live in love and relationship. No being is exempt; no being is insignificant; everything has its own realm, role, space and time in Christ Jesus, the final Omega point.
